Franco-American AssociationThe NATO American AIR FORCE BASE
From 1952 to 1967, many americans based on the NATO AFB lived in the LAON area with
their families. The messages they let on our Guest
book
or that they send us by e-mail show that they most have good memories of the area, and
some of them sometimes come back and visit us for a few days or a few hours. Visits which
may be opportunities of very moving reunions.
Named G.R.H. (Government Rental Housing)
by the americans who built it, the actual "Cité Marquette", from the ramparts
of the High Town, has much changed.
The trees and hedges have
grown up, the houses found each its personality.
We were told that the actual Sault Sainte Marie street (here on the right) was then
nicknamed "Snob Hill" because most of its inhabitants were officers.
Here on the left, the city of Laon as it appears from the end of the "Cité Marquette", on the road which go towards Vivaise and Couvron.
The 1st Regiment of Marine
Artillery is now installed on what became the Quartier Mangin.
This regiment has celebrated its bicentennial on June 28th and 29th 2003.
